NAGASAKI NOMAD FEST
NAGASAKI NOMAD FEST
On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to say a few words as we open NAGASAKI NOMAD FEST.
This festival was created by five community managers who share one wish: to connect the people who live in Nagasaki with the digital nomads who travel the world as they work. Thanks to your support, all 80 participant places filled up very quickly. To everyone who applied, and to everyone who took an interest in the festival, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
It all started last year, when we met the digital nomads who visited Nagasaki. Seeing the city for the first time, they shared how genuinely moved they were by the harbor viewed from the hillside streets, the wonderful food, and the warmth of the people here. Through their eyes, we were reminded how proud we can be of the everyday Nagasaki we so easily take for granted.
Those bonds reached beyond Nagasaki. This March we met again in Da Nang, Vietnam, and in September in Chiang Mai, Thailand. To have friends you can laugh with across borders and say “We meet again” — we want to share that joy with as many people in Nagasaki as we can. That is where this festival begins.
Nagasaki is the city of Dejima — the one window that stayed open to the world even during Japan’s era of isolation. Welcoming foreign languages and cultures, it grew a culture of its own where Japanese, Chinese and Dutch influences blended together. The people of that time did not understand one another’s words from the start either. It was their curiosity and passion — the wish to know, to share, to connect — that let this city reach out to the world.
The theme of this festival, learned from that history, is “dialogue.” Set aside your title and the language barrier, and meet on equal footing. Perfect English is not needed. With a smile, a few gestures, and the wish to connect, hearts will always find a way to meet.
On the day, everyone splits into four “islands” — Culture, Education, Business and Peace — where people who live in Nagasaki and people who travel the world talk together about the city’s future. From here, we hope a new kind of relationship is born, one that is neither tourism nor work.
Digital nomads are people who work anywhere in the world with just a laptop. Many have specialized skills — engineers, designers, entrepreneurs — and they tend to stay for several weeks to several months, living in a city rather than just passing through. They are new companions who sit somewhere between a traveler and a resident, and we believe they open several possibilities for Nagasaki.
First, they bring new energy to the city. Because they stay for a while, they visit local restaurants, inns and shops as part of daily life, supporting the community and its economy.
Second, they spark new work and new ideas. When the world’s knowledge — hard to find in a regional city — meets Nagasaki’s companies and doers, new collaborations and ventures begin to grow.
Third, they carry Nagasaki’s appeal out to the world. The city described in their own words reaches countries and people we could never have reached on our own.
And fourth, they offer learning for the next generation. Encountering diverse countries and ways of life becomes a precious door to the wider world for children and young people.
People who visit once and return again and again, thinking about the region’s future together with its residents — we believe that widening this circle of lasting connections will be a real strength for a Nagasaki facing population decline.
We, the organizing committee, want this festival to be the beginning of something that continues on from here. Just as Dejima was once a window to the world, we want to open Nagasaki to the world once more, and bring the knowledge and diverse ways of life we gain back to the region. As the first step of this “new Dejima,” the public and private sectors joined hands to create this occasion. We will keep moving forward so that the encounters born here lead to the next reunion, and to a new future for Nagasaki.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nagasaki Prefecture, Nagasaki City, and the Nagasaki International Tourism & Convention Association for their support; to the companies and organizations that sponsored and exhibited; and to all the performers and everyone involved.
The food trucks and workshops at Onoue Hill during the day are open to everyone, with no reservation needed. If you weren’t able to register, please feel free to drop by with your family and friends.
New winds, in every age, blow from dialogue between people. On October 19, in Dejima’s city of Nagasaki, we look forward to meeting you — together with friends from around the world.
